Tourist information

Piran is a settlement in southern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran and is most likely the most attractive of Slovenia's beachfront tourist resort, perched on a small piece of land jutting into the ocean. It is the best preserved cultural monument of Slovenian Istria and the nearest neighbour of Portoroz. Piran feels more like an Italian beachfront town, without all the Italian travelers, and for decent reason: Piran was part of the Venetian realm from the late 13th century to the end of the 18th century and then part of Italy in 20th century. There is a little flight terminal situated 15 kilometers away in Portoroz. With a shortage of hotel accommodation the ideal option can be to take a holiday apartment or holiday house. A number of local tourist offices maintain listings of such apartments and villas and will book them for you. Don't expect the homeowners to speak English, however they are typically really useful and hospitable. Standards vary: in some cases you'll get towels for a shower, in some cases not. However it will indeed be an experience and an opportunity to meet some residents.

Parking in Piran

Piran is really little and it takes no more than half of hour to stroll from one end to the other. Vehicles are typically not allowed in the old town and even when they are it's not a lot of fun since the roads are really slim and parking prices can go up to €20 per day.

Main sights

  • Tartini square - the attractive oval-shaped main plaza, with a statue of the legendary violinist Giuseppe Tartini. This was once the harbour, however after it silted up it was paved over with white stone.
  • Church of St. George the patron saint of Piran, overlooks the Old town. From its campanile you have a magnificent view of Piran and its countryside and all the way across the ocean to the Croatian and Italian Shore.
  • Venetian House - The red building on Tartini plaza, is a spectacular example of medieval Venetian architecture and the oldest building on the plaza.
  • Sergej Masera Maritime Museum.

Cuisine & Gastronomy

Many of Piran's taverns are situated throughout the beachfront with open air seating and exceptional sights. The food and service is typically decent, however many of the dining establishments tend to have comparable food lists and comparable rates. Dining establishments away from the main beachfront area can be a somewhat less expensive. There are as well a variety of pizzerias and gelaterias spread around the town.
